Songkran the traditional Thai New Year, is celebrated from 13 April to 15 April unless you are in Pattaya and this sometimes runs to April 19th ( 18th is the crazy day in Nakula and the 19th for Pattaya and Jomtien. During Songkran, small shops and businesses close and many people leave the cities to return to their home villages and towns to spend the holidays with their families. It is a time for Thai people to make sure their homes are clean, show kindness and consideration to parents and the elderly and pay their respects to Buddha images at the temples. Songkran falls during the hottest time of the year and Songkran is also known as the Water Festival because of one of the holiday's most enjoyed and best known customs is the dousing of people with water. This practive is in fact derived from the pouring of scented waters over the hands of parents and the elderly as a mark of respect.
Songkran is also a time for merit-making and people bring food for the monks at the local temples. another merit-making gesture is the showing of kindness to animals. People see out caged animals and fish accidentally trapped in waterways and release them.
Over the years Songkran has changed little with the exception of Pattaya and a few other sites. Westerners have joined the Water Festival and it has now become feared by some of the expats because of the difficulty of going anywhere and at anytime without getting drenched. But all in all it remains a very fun festival which I attend each year. Tips for you, put your wallet in a plastic bag. Put a small towel in a plastic bag as well to wipe of the white powder from your eyes. keep your money dry as well. Don't wear good clothes during this holdiay!! Keep a smile on your face, buy a water gun and join in the fun.
