                                                                                   Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai has a striking mountain backdrop, over 300 temples and a quaint historical aura. It's also a modern, friendly, internationally-flavoured city with much to offer the visitor - food, accommodation and shopping are all top quality and cheap, and the nights are relatively cool.
Thailand's second-largest city and the gateway to the country's north was founded in 1296. You can still see the moat that encircled the original city. Doi Suthep, topped by one of Thailand's holiest wats, rises behind the city, providing a dramatic backdrop and fine views of the city.  Many flights leave daily from the Bangkok airport and flight time is about 1 hour.
                                                           TRAIN TRAVEL IN THAILAND
The State Railways of Thailand are easily the best way to get around and see the country. Train travel in Thailand is comfortable, safe, cheap, environmentally friendly. Unlike flying, it's a genuine Thai experience that makes the journeys as much part of your trip as the destinations... In fact, Thailand has one of the best metre-gauge rail systems in the world. Taking the train is the best way to travel between Bangkok & Chiang Mai, and a train+ferry combo is the best way from Bangkok to Ko Samui. Train & bus is the best way from Bangkok to Krabi or Phuket. Heading for Laos? Hop on the Bangkok-Nong Khai train, as Vientiane is just across the river. Taking the train is also a wonderful way to travel between Bangkok, Penang, Kuala Lumpur & Singapore, the whole 1,249-mile journey to Singapore taking 48 hours and costing only $50/£33 one-way including sleeper berths for both nights. By Clicking the map above it will bring to a website that will explain in detail how to travel by train in Thailand, with train schedules, fares, and how to buy tickets both within & from outside Thailand. It will also have Thailand Bus travel information.
Thai trains have three classes: 1st, 2nd and 3rd. 1st class only exists as modern air-conditioned sleeping-cars on overnight trains. 2nd class comes in seat and sleeper versions, in air-conditioned and non-air-con varieties, and is very comfortable especially on sleeper trains and the air-conditioned express railcars. Even 3rd class is surprisingly clean and acceptable by European standards, and is an enjoyable way to travel for many shorter trips.
Do I need a reservation..?  Yes, All long-distance trains in Thailand and Malaysia are 'reservation obligatory', so you will need a seat or berth reservation for each train you take. Reservations open one month before departure. A Bangkok to Singapore journey involves three trains and will be ticketed as three separate train journeys, either Bangkok-Hat Yai, Hat Yai-Kuala Lumpur and KL to Singapore, or Bangkok to Butterworth, Butterworth to KL, KL to Singapore. Each ticket will have your date of departure, the train number and your seat or berth number printed on it.
Can I stop off along the way..? Yes, of course! But you cannot buy an open ticket and randomly hop on and off trains without a reservation. You need to buy a separate ticket/reservation for each specific train journey you make, for the date you want to make it. You can arrange all your tickets in advance or buy them as you go, keeping your options open, it's entirely up to you. Penang and Kuala Lumpur are both well worth a stopover.

Ko Chang was named for the elephant shape of its headland, although elephants are not indigenous to the island.
Koh Chang is off Thailand’s southeastern coast and Koh Chang is Thailand’s second-largest island after Phuket. The Koh Chang National Marine Park occupies most of Koh Chang as well as several nearby islands. The island is located 140 mi/225 km southeast of Bangkok. In recent years the island has become more popular with travelers and Thai people alike. Most of the beach resorts are located on the beautiful west coast of the island. Koh Chang has several wonderful waterfalls that allow swimming and diving from rocks. There are elephant trekking tours through the jungle and there are a dozen diving schools that will guide you to the best diving spots that Thailand has to offer. Most Thais like to go squid fishing at night and kayaking or hiking during the day.
There is a local information repository kohchang.guidebook.in.th that hosts maps and tips.
Arriving on Ko Chang by boat, you are greeted by many truck taxis waiting to take you around the island. The roads are steep and winding at times, but these local treks will be memorable.
Most of the beaches are on the western coast, and each has built up with a distinctive atmosphere based on shopping, activities, partying or chilling out. Accommodation offers a style to suit every type of traveller, from independent low budget backpackers to those wanting a touch of luxury. There are plenty of activities to be organised from almost anywhere on the island: snorkelling and diving trips to nearby coral reefs, jungle treks and elephant rides, not to mention various beach sports.
With it's long stretches of sandy beaches and bay, the west coast has become the focus of the development boom, and that's where most foreign travellers stay on the island. Beaches such as Haad Sai Khao (White Sands Beach), Khlong Prao and Kai Bae have developed more in the past few years than most of Thailand has in the last few decades. If you want to party, swim, dive or do practically anything else you'll find somewhere that's perfect for you. The east coast is home to major Thai villages but few beaches and so attracts far fewer foreign travellers. This side of the island is popular with Thais from cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai, who might never have seen the ocean before and want to join in traditional Thai seaside life.

Travel Reports
My girl friend and I decided to take a small little vacation so I booked a flight to Krabi. “Krabi is a southern province of Thailand and evidence establishes Krabi as having a very ancient history. Stone and bone tools, drawings and paintings from pre-historic times, have been found in great numbers. Pottery remains have been discovered and dated to an era 27,000 to 37,000 years old. It is suggested Krabi is therefore the most ancient settled community in Thailand, having existed from pre-history to present.” I had been to Krabi and Koh Phi Phi many times before but this was my girl friends first trip.
Air Asia was about 5,500 Round trip for both of us and it was very exciting for my girl friend as this was her first flight. We left for the airport from Pattaya the morning of the 3rd with a friend of mine and his girl friend. We arrived at the airport in about an hour and a half where I met Tik. The flight was smooth and Tik loved it but I think my friends girl might have had a different experience. After about an hour we landed and we shared a 600 baht taxi to Ao Nang Beach which was about a 25 minute ride. After checking into our hotel Tik and I rented a motor bike for 200 baht a day and then we went exploring. We found the Ao Nang beach area very clean and full of tourist. There are many shops facing the water like in Pattaya but they are much cleaner. We had lunch and then got two tickets for the long boat to take us to Rai Lay Beach. It was only about a 15 minute journey but the sight seeing was wonderful. When we got to the beach I did a fast photo shoot and then we went swimming. It was Tik’s first time swimming in salt water and she was amazed at how clear the water was. We spent about 3 hours there and then hired a long boat to take us around to a few of the smaller islands. It was getting late so we headed back by boat to our motor bike and returned to our hotel. The hotel was called The Somkiet Buri Resort and Spa and was wonderful but expensive at about 4,000 per night. The resort was only a few minutes from the beach and central to everything. The next day we went exploring again and spent most of the day on the beaches. That night we walked around the main beach town of Ao Nang and found many interesting places which included a large string of bars off the main road which were full of cute little Thai girls. The 3rd day we took the morning boat to Koh Phi Phi and stayed in a the Phi Phi hotel which was only a few minutes walk from the docking. The hotel was clean and not expensive at only 1,500 baht a night. We took a shower and then went to the beach to rent a long boat to go to Koh Phi Phi Lay where I wanted to have a sexy photo shoot. We found a captain of a long boat and agreed on 800 baht for 4 hours. We were off in a flash and it only took about 20 minutes to make the trip. He took us too many small coves and inlets and we would stop from time to time and take some photos. I had bought a mask and snorkel for Tik so I got her geared up and she went to look at all the little fish. You
could hear her through the snorkel talking to the little fish trying to get them to come to her. She had a wonderful time. After she had her fill of swimming I told the captain to find us a small little beach where he could leave us for 15 minutes so I could take some sexy photos of her. He found a nice place and he agreed to come back for us in about 15 minutes. Tik got in a nice sexy swim suit and I started to take some nice photos when all of a sudden she started jumping around screaming “ Something biting me “ She had backed into a nest of mosquitoes and they were eating her alive. She made a dash for the water only to discover another boat heading into the beach. She returned for her swim gear and then to the water. They had bitten her about 20 times but she was now safe in the water. That kind of spoiled the rest of the photos shoots so we just continued to enjoy the day and visit more beaches before returning back to Koh Phi Phi Don. After getting back to the hotel we showered, played and took a nap only to wake up to discover it was past midnight. The next day the hotel required an 11 am check out and our boat was due to leave at 3:30 pm so we left our bags in the lobby and headed to the beach. We spent a few hours on the beach and then met up with Jerry and his girl. Jerry had injured his arm and was fighting a serious infection so swimming was not an option for him. Tik and I headed off to find a restaurant and wait for our boat to leave. The boat left on time and it was a quick hour ride to the coast of Ao Nang but to our surprise the tide was out and I mean really out. They transferred use to a long boat which took us closer to shore but then they ran out of water. So they dropped us off with our bags in the middle of the bay in knee deep water. There were a lot of older people on board with a lot of bags and there was no one there to help. It took Tik and me about 20 minutes to make the walk in the shallow water and mud back to the beach where a 30 year old bus was waiting for us. I looked back before getting on the bus and took a few photos of the people still walking back to the beach. Even after getting back to the beach people were still be transferred to the long boats and the sun was setting fast.
Tik and I were dropped of by the bus driver at our hotel which was called the Cozy Place. It was a new 5 story building and the room price was 1,500 baht. The room was wonderful with a large flat screen mounted to the wall, a huge king sized bed and of course everything was new. We rented another motor bike from the hotel and we were off in search of a sea food dinner. We found a very nice place by the bay and Tik ordered about 7 dishes. She is a small girl but finished most of what she had ordered. After dinner we drove around and stopped at Ao Nang market area where she went shopping for souvenirs for her family. After her shopping bag was full we went back to the hotel and had a very good nights rest. The next morning we took our flight to the airport and Tik and I said goodbye and I took a taxi to The Nana Hotel. The rest of the story another time.

In order to limit the amount of foreigners using "back-to-back" border runs, Thai Immigration has issued a new regulation regarding the 30 days tourist exemption.
Effective immediately, travellers without visa will get only 15 days of stay if they are arriving via a land border checkpoint from a neighboring country.
